How to Pick the Best Baby Walkers
1. Recommended Age
While all babies grow at their own rate, most will be pulling themselves up within their first few months of age. Then, they’ll be trying to stand on their own. That’s when they can really start to get the best benefit out of a baby walker. Some baby walkers are designed for babies that are only a few months old, and some like push toys are better suited for older babies and toddlers. The really great ones will grow along with them.
2. Key Feature
Basically, they’ll be made of wood, plastic, metal, or a combination of any of the three. And, they each have their own benefits.
- Baby walkers made out of wood are easier on the environment because of their manufacturing process. They also usually operate entirely on your baby’s imagination and motivation, instead of batteries, again a win for the environment. The only real downside is that the paint on the wood can fade a bit over time.
- Walkers made out of plastic, or a combination of plastic and metal, are much more commonly found. And, we’ll only highlight safe plastic toys for your babies. Plastic is a little more durable than wood, and can be easier to clean and maintain. You’ll also generally find more bells and whistles on durable plastic baby walkers. Of course, all of those lights and sounds will need batteries.
3. Battery Operated
Don’t get us wrong! We’re not dinging batteries. But, we think noting them is important for a couple of reasons. Your baby will get plenty of mental and visual stimulation whether the baby walker uses batteries or not. There is a cost factor with batteries, and you definitely don’t want to run out of them. Luckily, we can also get rechargeable batteries, as well as recycle the old ones.
4. Does it make sounds?
You’ll see that different walkers have different activities. Some have attached toys for tiny fingers to grasp, squeeze and squeak, and some are made to be used with your baby’s own favorite toys. You’ll also see some that play music and sing-along songs. This is where your imagination comes in. What gadgets do you think they would like the best? The best baby walkers will not only help them learn to walk, but the different interactive features will spark their imagination and creativity while fine tuning their motor skills and cognitive development.
5. Size
Think about the size of the walker. You want to make sure that your baby will have plenty of room to really enjoy their newfound mobility. Think about doorways and furniture. You’ll notice a broad range of sizes that are available. You might even want to think about how tall it is. Babies aren’t all the same size, and you at least want to give them a chance to grab ahold of it and stand up.
6. Weight
You want it to be heavy enough so that it won’t easily tip over. And, you want it to be light enough, so that if it does, it’ll be okay. It also needs to be light enough for them to be able to move it easily.

DIY, Craft and Décor: Ideas for Baby walker lovers
Instructableshas a great video showing how to use PVC pipes to make a baby walker. It would certainly take a little skill and ingenuity to safely put it together, especially securing the wheels. But, if it’s done right, your baby would have their own unique walker with plenty of places to hang their favorite toys.

For the true craftsmen, or women, out there, you can always design your own beauty made out of solid wood. There are some great plans and ideas at Buildeasy, or you could create your own. It would be a lot of fun to make one with exactly what you want your baby to have.

Family Days Tried And Tested has a step-by-step guide for building one out of a sturdy cardboard box, with strategic holes where bed sheets were woven to create seats. The outside could be decorated with any theme. We’re not sure how long they would last, but it’s a fairly simple idea.
