How to Pick the Best Trampolines for Kids

1. Jumping Surface:

Determine how much space you are willing to dedicate to your child’s new jumping device. Consider the dimensions of your ideal trampoline, including its diameter, closure height, and distance from the ground. What’s more, consider the shape of the jumping surface. Trampolines may be circular, square, or oval-shaped.

The size and shape of the jumping surface help determine the location and number of bouncy sweet spots. Rectangular trampolines tend to provide end-to-end high bounces. According to Nationwide, such high bounces can be dangerous for inexperienced jumpers. Whereas, circular jumping surfaces are usually only bouncy in the center. They tend to provide children with a more moderate bouncing experience.

The material must be flexible, soft, and springy. It should flex under intensified pressure without losing its rigidity or shape. You must never exceed your trampoline’s passenger or weight capacity.

Keep in mind that many trampolines are used outside. The material should not warp or fade when exposed to direct sunlight or moisture.

2. Size

Trampolines come in many different sizes. How do you choose one?

Miniature trampolines, like the 3-foot Little Tykes jumper, are usually geared toward younger audiences. These low-impact exercise devices can only support one or two young jumpers. Small trampolines tend to feature stabilizing handlebars and spring-free jumping surfaces. Elements like these are meant to improve the safety and comfort of junior jumpers.

Since these jumpers are so small, they are often suitable for indoor home use. They help fill the void for young jumpers, as standard backyard trampolines are not suitable for children under the age of 5.

Midsized trampolines tend to be 8 to 12 feet in diameter. They may be able to accommodate two to four jumpers, depending on their weight limit. These jumpers are the perfect size for small backyards.

The biggest trampolines are between 14 and 15 feet in diameter. These are the Rolls Royces of the trampoline world. They are the kind of jumping surfaces that you can enjoy as a teen or an adult. If your house is the designated spot for family gatherings and playdates, do your best to squeeze an extra-large trampoline into your budget.

3. Materials

We cannot stress the importance of choosing high-quality materials. Opt for rust-resistant galvanized steel spring and tightly woven polyethylene fabric. Make sure that there is no way that young children will come in contact with the hooks, springs, or frame.

Every element of a trampoline is going to be strained during your child’s jumping sessions. You do not want to risk your child’s well being by investing in a trampoline made from inferior materials.

The nation’s doctors treat nearly 250,000 trampoline-related injuries each year. We don’t share these statistics to keep you from these entertaining toys. However, you should consider these facts when choosing a model for your children.

4. Safety Nets

Most modern trampolines come with custom-fit safety enclosures. Look for an enclosure that protects jumpers from coming in contact with the trampoline’s springs and frame. Most enclosures are supported by verticle poles that are mounted on T-sockets. A tightly woven fabric sheet should be thread over the poles to create a seamless wall around the jumping surface. Opt for a tightly woven fabric that will not tear under pressure.

The enclosure should have an easy access zip or velcro entry point. There may or may not be a ladder that leads up to the entry point. Safety clips help lock the entrance in place during jumping sessions.

5. Safety Pads

Safety pads are the donut-shaped fabric sleeves that cover the springs and other rugged elements that surround and support a trampoline’s jumping surface. Most modern trampoline manufacturers consider safety parts an integral part of a trampoline package. Springs or not, we wouldn’t opt for a trampoline without this essential safety element.

6. Frame

Make sure that your trampoline has a durable steel frame. We prefer those made out of unbending tubular steel. It should have a rust-resistant powder coating or something that protects it from the elements.
