If you’re a parent of a normal child, you’ve heard some close variation of, “PULLEEEZE? I gotta have this! It’s just what I need to finish my collection. You don’t have to buy me any other presents FOREVER!!” Somehow every kid learns this script at the foot of some childhood Yoda inspirational instructor.

How to pick the "Best LEGO City Building Sets"

We compared like features for each of the chosen sets so you can easily spot which sets are just right for your kiddos.

1. Recommended Age

The lowest recommended age for the regular size LEGO building brick is three years old. That doesn’t mean the littlest ones are left out of the fun, though. LEGO designed the Duplo  blocks for little hands. The bricks are more substantial, easier to handle, and a relative cinch to snap together just like big sister’s LEGO blocks. Every LEGO block is a choking hazard for those less than three years.

2. ACCESSORIES

Accessories are the little odds and ends that make the builds more realistic and more fun. Placing all the stickers need adult help. They can be tiny and exacting to get them on and straight at the same time. We highly recommend tweezers.

3. Minifigures

Minifigures are like little dolls, usually important figurines in the building set. There are also figures within the accessory sets.

4. Pieces

The number of pieces gives you a direct look at how difficult or complicated the build will be. If you have an 11-year-old, this will be a good thing and keep their interest. If you get a large set for a five-year-old, you will probably need to stick close by and be ready to help. Frustration can eliminate all the fun.

5. Dimensions

The dimensions will give you an idea of oversize shipping charges and where the box will be delivered. The LEGO bricks are quite good at packing them in such a way that there is no extra space or chance for the product to rattle around in shipment.

6. Weight

Weight is tricky. On the one hand, it can be measured along with the dimensions for shipping costs and the best delivery arrangements. Once you have the set built, you can judge if this is a set to be built and torn down in a day. It might be that you will need to make a semi-permanent space for it to reside, particularly as part of a LEGO City Building set.
